Exciting Easter weekend of rugby

As part of our ongoing Centenary celebrations Old Penarthians RFC is proud to announce two days of exciting Rugby entertainment over the Easter period.

On Good Friday afternoon, the 29th of March 2024, we propose to host a game between a Presidents Invitational XV and the Welsh Academicals with a kick-off scheduled for 2.30pm. Our squad will consist of a number of the regular first XV players, who will be joined by representatives of local clubs that have had long associations with the Club. It is also anticipated that our team will be strengthened with the addition of a number of former Welsh internationals.

Recruitment for the squad is currently ongoing with players from Cardiff, Penarth, Beddau, Ynysybwl and Glamorgan Wanderers already committed to play.

For further information about the opposition, go to Welshacademicals.rfc.wales

It should be noted that two former players for the Academiclas were Gareth Owen Edwards and Thomas Gerald Reames Davies, who many will recall where our guests of honour last September when we held our Centenary Dinner.

Old Penarthians players Chris Poole, Adan Cole and Steffan Crimp have also played for this invitational team

On the following day, Saturday 30th March 2024 two further matches are proposed one between our Youth XV and a select Crawshays Youth XV and also a match between our Women’s 1st XV and Dowlais Women's team.

The women's match against Dowlais will be kicking off at 1:15 pm and will no doubt prove to be a very entertaining and high scoring game if the recent match between the sides is anything to go by. Dowlais RFC, were a truly welcoming club on the last occasion and we intend to ensure that there is a warm Old Pens welcome for the visitors on this occasion. We would also like to thank them for agreeing to play us on the Saturday as opposed to the normal Sunday.

The opportunity for a club to play against a Crawshays team is a very rare one and we are therefore grateful and honoured that in our Centenary year their Youth team will be playing a match against our youth team.

Like us, Crawshays have been in existence for 100 years and have made it a policy to play fast, entertaining rugby. This match will be kicking off at 2:30 pm and is certain to be an exciting and close fought encounter.

Everyone is welcome on either or both days to join us in celebrating our centenary season and the sport of Rugby.

Further details of the teams for all three matches will be provided over the next few weeks.
