Chairman's Christmas Message

It doesn’t take me to point out that 2020 has been a very strange and difficult year for everybody, not least the Old Penarthians’s RFC. But I would like to think that throughout these very difficult times the club, its committee, players and members have all worked together to ensure that wherever possible the fellowship and traditions of the club can be maintained.

The ever changing rules and regulations that individuals and the club have had to put up with over the last 9 months have caused many problems and difficulties but I think it’s appropriate to recognise that many people within the club have taken on the task of keeping the club going, both socially and rugby wise, with great determination, professionalism and enthusiasm.

A lot of people have played their part but special mention must go to Chairman of the Social Committee Mel Jones and Mini and Junior Chairman Jeff Norman who have both worked tirelessly to ensure the club and rugby sections have been able to carry on in a safe and protected way. Most people will not have seen the work that these two people, ably assisted by many others, have put in behind the scenes to keep the club going this year but it is truly a magnificent effort and deserves the thanks and appreciation of each and every member. Well done to the both of you and the many others who have worked with you this year.

On the rugby playing front sadly there is not a lot to report. The first team did manage to play a total of 14 league and cup games losing 7, winning 6 and drawing 1 in season 2019/2020 but on the bright side we are unbeaten in season 2020/2021!!

Behind the scenes there has been quite a bit of action with the appointment initially of Keri Lovell as Director of Rugby and then, when he unfortunately had to stand down, his replacement Stuart Clarke.

In addition the appointment of two player coaches in Jake Thomas and Luke Ford for the senior men’s teams bodes well for the future as does the appointment of Stuart Barter as head coach of the women’s team.

In many ways and for many people 2020 has been a difficult year and whilst I am sure it will take some time to get back to normal I am also sure that when we do the club will be stronger and better prepared for the next chapter of its life.

The club’s centenary year starts in November 2023 and will conclude in November 2024 so that gives all members something to plan for and celebrate and we can then look back on this year as a dim and distant memory.

On behalf of the club, it’s committees, and coaches can I wish you all a Happy Christmas and an exciting and safe New Year.

Stephen Clarke
Chairman- Old Penarthians RFC
